Why Do Women Get Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast Reduction surgery is something often considered by women with very large and heavy breasts who may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight. Women with disproportionately large breasts often suffer from pain on a daily basis, and physical activities can be too painful to enjoy.

Also called Reduction Mammoplasty, Breast Reduction has helped many women enjoy life without constant pain in the neck, back, and shoulders, and to feel more comfortable in their bodies.  Other problems associated with very large breasts include skin irritation from bra strap indentations in their shoulders and even skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Yeast rashes under the breasts are quite common. Additionally, the burden of larger breasts, for some women, limits many areas of their life from activities to fashion, and some feel self-conscious about their breast size in social situations. Breast reduction surgery is performed using a few different techniques depending on the amount of reduction required to achieve each woman’s individual goals.

Reduction surgery involves removing fat, glandular breast tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer. At the same time, the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) can be reduced as well. Reducing breast size results in a better contoured figure with the breasts elevated higher on the chest in most cases.  Because large breasts sag, reducing the overall size always includes a breast lift.

Techniques for breast reduction vary, but the most common is an anchor-shaped incision circling the areola that then extends downward toward the breast fold and follows the natural curve of the breast fold. Another method is utilizing the same incision pattern minus the incision in the breast fold. After making the incision, your plastic surgeon will then remove the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin, and reposition the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound. The entire procedure takes approximately 2 hours.
