A cropped shot of a woman wrapping a tape measure around her torso after a tummy tuckIf you want a tight, toned, and flat stomach, you need to know that dieting and exercising may not be enough to achieve the results you want. If you go to the gym every day and build up your abdominal muscles, no one will be able to see them if you have loose sagging abdominal skin covering them. Some people are also genetically predisposed to have stubborn stomach fat that won’t go away using traditional methods of fat loss.

At Posh Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, we have helped countless people who have been struggling with the appearance of their tummy by providing them with a tummy tuck. This surgical procedure is safe and effective, and it can produce outstanding aesthetic results.

The Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery (properly called an abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure whereby the excess skin and fat of the belly are removed (dermatolipectomy) and the loose muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened. A tummy tuck is most popular with mothers who want to regain the appearance of a tight, smooth belly like they had before pregnancy or those who have had dramatic weight loss. While motherhood can be a beautiful journey it does take it’s toll on the body of many women. A tummy tuck can remove the excess fat, trim away the sagging skin, and retighten the loose abdominal muscles that often result from pregnancy. Through this, it can restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure.

Those who have undergone dramatic weight loss and now have a large amount of loose skin around their abdomen can also greatly benefit from a tummy tuck. The procedure helps those who have gone through their weight-loss journey lose this excess skin. Once the excess skin is excised and the remaining tissue is tightly redraped over the abdomen, the region looks trim and fit.

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Kirk and her highly skilled nursing team. I had a tummy tuck a year ago now, and I love the results. I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to boost my confidence. This has changed my life. Thank you Dr. Kirk!

How a Tummy Tuck is Performed

During the tummy tuck procedure an incision is made from one hip bone to the other and the area of loose skin from the pubic mound to above the navel is removed along with any excess fat. The remaining space is then closed and the navel is realigned to maintain it’s original position. The surgeon also rejoins the stomach muscles that have become separated by the pressure of accommodating the growing child or excessive abdominal size. The separation and weakening of these muscles is what allows for the belly area to have a protruding appearance.

Your Tummy Tuck will be performed by Dr. Sofia Kirk at her office in Jacksonville, FL.

The end result is a flatter, tighter stomach without the loose, flaccid skin and stretch marks. Tummy tuck scars run across the abdomen from one hip bone to the other, although this is almost always hidden from view below the bikini line. Abdominoplasty is often done in conjunction with liposuction to give enhanced results. The before and after results of a tummy tuck can be quite astounding. The procedure itself takes between 2 and 4 hours and a tummy tuck’s recovery time is about 2-3 weeks of full rest, after which you can begin to resume light activities with caution.

Is There a “Right Time” to Get a Tummy Tuck?

There are some instances in which it would be advisable to postpone undergoing a tummy tuck. If you have plans for further weight loss after the procedure then you will risk having more loose, excess skin and the effects of the abdominoplasty will be reduced. Also if you intend to undergo childbirth it is advisable to wait since the tightening of the vertical muscles in the abdominal wall will be reversed as the muscles separate again under pressure.

The doctor may also advise against a tummy tuck procedure if you have had previous abdominal surgery as the compounded effect of the scars may be particularly prominent and unsightly.

How to Prepare for a Tummy Tuck

Proper tummy tuck preparation ensures a safe procedure and smooth recovery. Here are the steps involved in getting ready:

Get a Medical Evaluation

Meet with Dr. Kirk to discuss your goals, medical history, and whether you’re a good candidate. She may order blood tests, imaging, or other evaluations to confirm your health status.

Stop Smoking

Quit smoking and avoid nicotine products for at least 4-6 weeks before and after surgery. They can impair healing and increase complication risks.

Adjust Medications

Inform Dr. Kirk about prescription or over-the-counter medications, supplements, or herbs you’re taking. Stop taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or certain supplements that may increase bleeding as well.

Prepare Your Home

Set up a comfortable recovery area with pillows, blankets, and other necessary items within easy reach. Prepare healthy meals in advance or stock up on easy-to-cook options to avoid extra effort post-surgery.

Arrange Support

Plan for someone to drive you home after the surgery. Arrange for a friend, family member, or professional caregiver to help during the first few days of recovery as well.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Tummy tuck recovery involves a combination of physical care, rest, and follow-up appointments. Here’s what you can expect.

Immediately After Surgery

You’ll spend a few hours in a recovery area where medical staff monitor you as the anesthesia wears off. Dr. Kirk will provide pain medication to manage discomfort, which is common in the first few days.

The First Week

Here are some important factors to keep in mind during the first week:

  • Rest and Activity Restrictions: Rest is crucial. However, light walking can promote circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
  • Compression Garments: You’ll wear a compression garment to support the abdomen, reduce swelling, and improve healing.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Expect swelling, bruising, and some discomfort. These symptoms will gradually improve.
  • Caring for Incisions: Follow Dr. Kirk’s instructions on cleaning the incision sites and changing dressings.
  • Sleeping Position: Sleep with your upper body elevated and knees slightly bent. This will reduce tension in the abdominal area.

Weeks 2-4

2-4 weeks post-surgery, you can anticipate the following:

  • Increased Mobility: Most people feel more comfortable resuming light activities and can return to work (if it doesn’t involve heavy lifting).
  • A Gradual Return to Exercise: Gentle movement like walking is encouraged. Avoid strenuous activities or core exercises.
  • Swelling: Swelling will begin to subside. However, some may persist for weeks or months.
  • Drain Removal: If drains were placed, they are usually removed 1-2 weeks post-surgery.

Weeks 4-6

Weeks 4-6 generally involve:

  • Improved Comfort and Mobility: Most patients experience less discomfort and improved mobility. This makes daily activities easier to manage.
  • Light Exercise: You can slowly incorporate low-impact exercises. Continue avoiding heavy lifting or intense core workouts.
  • Reduced Swelling: Swelling continues to diminish. Mild residual swelling may persist in some areas.
  • Scar Maturation: Incisions may start to flatten and lighten.

Long-Term Recovery

Dr. Kirk will let you know when you can return to regular exercise and activities. For most patients, this occurs after 6-8 weeks.

Your incision will gradually heal, forming a scar that fades over 6-12 months. To help with this process, Dr. Kirk may recommend treatments like silicone sheets or creams.
