Chemical Peels

Conveniently located to serve Jacksonville, FL

What is a chemical Peel? A chemical peel (chemexfoliation or derma peeling) is a minimally invasive procedure that improves your skin’s appearance by removing the damaged outer layers. Factors such as excessive sun exposure, severe acne, smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise can have a detrimental affect on the skin of the face leading to premature signs of aging. Many conditions can be treated with a facial chemical peel, including:

  • Scarring
  • Sun Damage
  • Rough/scaly patches of skin
  • Hyper/hypopigmentation
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Age spots
  • Acne and acne scars

There are many different options to consider when it comes to chemical peels and which one is right for you will depend upon what you hope to achieve, how deep you want the peel to be and how much recovery time you can afford to spare. The best place to begin would be a consultation with your peel specialist where you can tell them what results you wish to achieve and discuss the various options to available to you.

Light Chemical Peel

A light chemical peel does not usually cause any peeling of the skin, it could be considered more of a spa-level treatment that removes only the very top (epidermal) layer resulting in tighter, smoother skin with a healthy glow. This type of chemical peel is better suited for such conditions as acne, fine wrinkles, dry skin and uneven pigmentation.

No downtime is required, and you can go back to your regular activities on the same day. It is advisable to remain out of the sun for a week after the treatment and to use SPF daily. Light chemical peels offered at Posh Plastic Surgery include the glycolic peel at 30% or 70% concentration, the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance and the Skin Medica Vitalize Peel. Light chemical peels can be repeated weekly for up to six weeks to achieve your desired results.

Medium Chemical Peel

A medium chemical peel penetrates to a deeper layer of skin than a light chemical peel. The chemicals used for these peels will remove skin cells from both the outer layer of skin and the upper part of your middle layer of skin. Downtime for a medium chemical peel usually takes 3-4 days. A medium chemical peel applied on a Thursday or Friday should heal in time to return to regular activities on a Monday. Medium chemical peels offered at Posh Plastic Surgery include the 20% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel.

This level of chemical peel can be repeated every 6 to 12 months to help maintain the radiant look of your skin.

Deep Chemical Peel

The results of a deep chemical peel can be transformative, but the downtime associated with this peel is about 10-14 days, sometimes longer. A deep chemical peel is so called because it penetrates all the way down to the lower (dermal) layer of the skin. This type of procedure is quite severe and will result in scabs on the treated area to provide protection to the new skin being regenerated underneath. It is normal when undergoing a deep chemical peel for a local anesthetic and sedative to be given to help minimize any discomfort.

The deep chemical peels offered at Posh Plastic Surgery are the 40% and 60% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel. A deep chemical peel will result in redness, swelling, and discomfort for several days. The swelling can be expected to recede within a couple of weeks but you can expect the skin to be red for as many as 3 months. Despite the relatively long downtime for a deep chemical peel the results are worth it. You will experience complete rejuvenation of the epidermal layer of the skin plus restructuring and thickening of the dermal layer. These dramatic results can last for as many as 10 years.
